Magna International
Headquartered outside Ontario, Magna International is Canada’s largest automobile manufacturer, not to mention the largest automotive parts manufacturer in North America (and the third largest in the world).
With over 60 years of parts manufacturing, Magna International has partnerships with some of the biggest EV manufacturers. Its principal products include electric drivetrain and electric axle drive systems, both of which are designed for lightweight and heavy-duty commercial vehicles. The company also manufacturers its own line of gas-powered vehicles, which help it sustain near-term growth.
Much like other automotive manufacturers, the recent semiconductor shortage has stymied Magna International’s production output. That said, the company provides essential components for EV vehicles, and its short-term volatility will likely even out over time.
Over the past year, Magna International has faced financial challenges, reporting a decline in net income due to higher warranty costs, unfavorable foreign exchange rates, and restructuring expenses. In Q2 2024, net income dropped to $313 million from $339 million the previous year. By Q3 2024, sales fell 4% to $10.3 billion, reflecting a slowdown in global light vehicle production.
In response to weaker vehicle demand, Magna revised its 2024 sales forecast to $42.2–$43.2 billion, down from an earlier projection of up to $44.1 billion. Profit expectations were also lowered to $1.45–$1.55 billion. The company continues to navigate industry-wide challenges, including decreased production and demand in the automotive sector.
Lion Electric
Lion Electric, once the largest manufacturer of zero-emission urban vehicles, which include school buses (both full-sized and mini), public transit buses, semi-trucks, garbage trucks, and bucket trucks – is struggling. A Montreal-based company, Lion had high ambitions to become North America’s leader in transportation electrification.
However, Lion has come under hard times as of late. They have announced a strategic shift to concentrate on manufacturing electric school buses, temporarily pausing its electric truck production. This decision follows multiple rounds of layoffs, including over 100 employees in December 2024, leaving approximately 160 staff members dedicated to customer support and vehicle maintenance.
Lion is still technically in business, but it has filed for creditor protection under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA) and is currently undergoing a restructuring process, with trading of its shares suspended on both the TSX and NYSE due to delisting proceedings initiated by the exchanges; meaning the company is actively trying to remain operational while working through financial difficulties and seeking to restructure its debts.
NFI Group
With headquarters in Winnipeg, NFI Group is a major producer of battery-electric and fuel cell-electric buses. NFI is a leader in zero-emission mobility, with electric vehicles operating (or on order) in more than 150 cities in six countries. NFI offers the widest range of zero-emission battery and fuel cell-electric buses and coaches, and its vehicles have completed over 180 million EV service miles.
NFI Group has been a major player in the EV revolution since the very beginning. Since 2009, they’ve been designing and manufacturing Zero-Emission Buses (ZEBs), which are powered by batteries. Because of their experience in the business, NFI has one of the strongest capacities for production in the industry, with 50 different facilities in 10 countries employing around 8,750 people.
Over the past year, NFI Group has experienced notable developments. In the third quarter of 2024, the company reported an 8.2% year-over-year increase in new orders, totaling 1,050 equivalent units (EUs), contributing to a backlog valued at $12.0 billion. The average price per EU in this backlog rose by 19.5% compared to the same period in 2023. Additionally, the Aftermarket segment achieved strong revenue of $153 million, marking a 7% increase from the previous year.
The company is scheduled to release its fourth quarter and full year 2024 financial results on March 13, 2025.
